Our Lady of Sorrows
I wanted to interpret someone else’s work and I chose a chalk drawing from 1872 by Pre-Raphaelite artist Frederick Sandys called Mater Dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows). I just liked the picture and I chose it for its beauty, but the more I worked with it the more fitting it seemed for this terrible time we’ve been living though. A hard, sad year/era that’s been SO painful for so many that it’s hard to even encompass.
I see you, kids in cages, people dying alone on ventilators, trans and queer humans fighting for the safety to just live. I see you people being murdered for nothing but white supremacy, you who have lost your loved ones, hard working people holding on by a thread, or not holding on at all. I see you families who are slowly being driven mad by confinement and the struggle to keep loving your loved ones. I see and feel the never-ending quiet panic that no one can shake right now. I know it’s going to get better and I can’t wait to see you then.
