Medusa
I was raised on mythology* but I didn't comprehend Medusa's backstory until recently. She was just a girl, a maiden in the temple of Athena when Poseidon raped her. When Athena learned of this she was so incensed at the desecration of her temple that she turned Medusa into the monster we know and love today (Oh Athena, I thought better of you.)
Now I think of Medusa with love, kind of as the patron saint of victim blaming.
And gorgons have wings! Who knew?
*Big shout out to author Edith Hamilton and illustrator Steele Savage. And first edition Deities & Demigods!
